In this section, mostly based on [2], we describe two main approaches to automatic music genre recognition.
The first approach is called prescriptive and the second one is called emergent.
The prescriptive approach is called likewise because it assumes a prior taxonomy and tries to classify music pieces in this taxonomy. It is based on extracting meaningful properties from the music piece. The emergent approach is opposite to the prescriptive one. In this approach, no prior taxonomy is assumed. A classification emerges from the database by clustering songs according to a given similarity measure.
This approach is an unsupervised learning approach whereas the prescriptive approach is based on supervised learning.
