Guidelines

Past issues have featured sculptures, film stills, computer art, music scores, and collage, as well as watercolour paintings, ink drawings, and photos. Conventional and unconventional mediums are welcome.

Your work doesn't need to be “art”—we're interested in anything that can be captured and printed on a page. In fact, we love things that you wouldn't ordinarily think of as art.

Because each contributor is given several pages to showcase their work, we tend to choose work that is conceptually or visually cohesive. There doesn't necessarily need to be a theme, but it's best if you submit several pieces. In fact, the more the better.

Folio is published every Fall and Winter semester. Though deadlines fluctuate, our call for submissions typically ends in late October (for the Fall issue, published in late November) and early March (for the Winter issue, published in early April). We accept submissions on an ongoing basis.

Next deadline: October 31, 2010 (for the Fall 2010 issue).

How to submit

There are several ways to submit your work.

1. Email images as attachments to foliomag@gmail.com. Images don't need to be high resolution for the initial review process, and sketchy photo documentation is fine.

2. If your work is online on a personal website, Flickr, or blog, send us a link. You can point out certain pieces, or let us sift through. Note: if you have a huge amount of photos on your Flickr, it's nice if you make a set to guide us a little.

3. If you're on Flickr, add your photos to our pool. We'll review them for our next issue.

4. If you have a lot of files, or large files, you can .zip them up and upload them to an online file-sharing site like rapidshare or yousendit. Then send us the link.

5. If you don't have access to a digital camera or scanner, you can lend us hard copies of your work for curatorial review. Email us to arrange the details.

Technicalities

Only students currently enrolled at McGill University and those who graduated at the most recent convocation are eligible to submit their work to Folio.

The same artist will not be published in consecutive issues, but repeat submissions are welcome.

Submissions must not be previously exhibited or published in a McGill-related venue (such as the Fridge Door Gallery, Steps magazine, Canvas journal, or The McGill Daily).

Work printed in Folio remains the intellectual property of the respective artists.
