These pictures were taken at the Farm at Easter, 1930. Helen Weldon and Jo Johannsen went out with Alma for a week. I rather think that Evelyn must have been there too since Helen was her friend rather than Alma's. (In fact, she probably took the pictures). Anyhow, here they are: hiking and riding (Alma on Winnie and Jo on Billy), and Jo cooking on the wood stove in the New House.
Jo came into our family when her parents moved to Montreal and Jo was sent to Traf. She joined Alma in the Fifth Form and they became friends. When the Depression hit and the Engineering firm for which Mr. J. was agent folded, he moved his family to Shawbridge and Jo moved into 655 (our house on Grosvenor Ave.) and was with us for a year. She and Alma were both in Second Year, McGill then.
Alma remembers going to the Johannsen house (near Westmount Park) for lunch on the day school ended in June 1929 and meeting the family and having salmon which she hadn't ever tasted before. Obviously something to remember!
In May 1932 Alma was on a camping trip in the Laurentians with Mr. Johannsen and Jo and Bob and Peggy. Doug Urquhart and George Sumner made up the rest of the party. They got lost and were out for three extra rather hungry, cold days before they found themselves.
Another person who stayed with us in 655 was DUNCAN WILLIAMS. He came in
1934 --- or perhaps 1935 --- along with a batch of English Public School boys
for whom Brook Claxton was somehow
responsible and people like Daddy and ``Hughie'' Hugessen and B. M. Hallward
stood sponsor. Duncan skied enormously well and played the flute. He was in
Mining Engineering at McGill and had great difficulty getting through exams but
finally made it (B.ENG. '37) and went out West in Mining jobs. He lives in
England and Alma has kept in pretty close touch with him and his family. During
the war he was in the Commandos and I think got an M.C.
