Nick Lyon, Cockroach Productions Orangutan Film Protection Project.

Central Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia 2005

I took this image whilst working with the rescue teams of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation. There had been reports of a legal concession cutting into prime orangutan habitat. The concession granted is 40,000 hectares. When I travelled upriver to visit the site the team put estimates of around 600 orangutans living in this area. When we returned to base camp they reported on their findings and were later involved in a scientific survey of the area. This survey revealed that the area contained between 1,600 and 2,000 orangutans. This is a substantial percentage of the remaining 50,000 wild Bornean orangutans, and this forest concession is not an isolated case.

Forest continues to be cleared in Indonesia whilst 25,000,000 hectares of land stands undeveloped in Kalimantan. The financial incentives of hardwood logging are currently beating longer term considerations of sustainable production.

Not all of the industry is involved in unsustainable, destructive clearances. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is an industry led innitiative whose goals I fully support. The members of the Ape Alliance in the UK are in full support of the RSPO. We just need everyone in the palm oil industry to sign up to the group and support the criteria of sustainability to ensure a future for the [orangutan].
