ACM

The McGill Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery was founded in the summer of 1997. As a McGill Club we represent and are composed of students from the departments of Computer Science, Computer and Electrical Engineering, and Management Information Systems. Our purpose is to organize and promote events relating to computers and the computer industry.

The first event of the new school year is the McGill level of the ACM Intercollegiate Programming Contest. This contest will take place on Saturday, September 12th from 11am to 4pm. Teams of two or three people will compete in this five hour event and the top two teams will proceed to the next level of competition. Last year the top McGill team made it all the way to the world championships where they placed 17th!

On September 15th we will be holding our Fall '98 Career Fair for the Computer Industry. If you are a graduating student or are looking for an internship position be sure to attend, and bring your resume. This year we have tried to attract not only the big name companies that many students are eager to meet with, but also many less well known companies that have great opportunities to offer. For instance, we have companies coming all the way from France and Singapore!

Once again this year we will host the McGill ACM Seminar Series. This set of lectures is designed to introduce students to some of the computer-related research that is currently ongoing at McGill. Look for the lectures to start up again in early October.

Finally, this year for the first time we are planning a job placement program for McGill students. Our goal is to pair students looking for programming experience with McGill professors who have programming tasks that need completing. This service will be available year round so if you are interested in part time work during the school year be sure to contact us.

We are always eager for new ideas and input. For more information about McGill ACM please see our website at http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~acmchpt. Use our online form to register as a new member and send questions or comments to acmchpt@ece.mcgill.ca.
