Compressing files

To reduce the size of file use the compress command. For example:

   compress filename(s)

Each file is replaced by one with the same name and the extension .Z. The amount of compression will vary according to the type of file. Text files can be reduced by as much as 50 to 60%.

Use the -v option if you want to see the percentage by which each file is compressed.
