How Do I Apply for Computer Science or Software Engineering at McGill?

McGill

It's not hard to apply, you just have to have a clear idea for which program you want to apply and then fill out McGill's online application form. To prepare yourself, you may want to review the following pages:

Once you know which program you want, you should visit the Prospective Students McGill Web Site and read all about being a McGill student, sign-up for a campus tour, find out about our Open House and so on.

If you are already a McGill student, you don't need to apply again, you just need to transfer into Computer Science or Software Engineering. See our page on transfers more more information.

When you are ready to apply, start from the Applying to McGill web site. You can click on the "Ready to Apply on-line? Click Here Now." icon and this will take you directly to the online application form. Enter all of your personal information and when you get to the page asking for your Program Choice, proceed as follows.

  • If you have decided on a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree:
    • For the box labelled "Faculty/School/Centre", select "Faculty of Science"
    • For the box labelled "Program", select "B Sc Physical, Earth, Math & Computer Sci" for all Computer Science or Software Engineering Majors, except for the Joint Computer Science and Biology Major. If you are specifically interested in the Joint Computer Science and Biology Major, then select "B Sc Biological, Biomedical & Life Sci".
    • For the box labelled "Major or Subject"
      • If you are a high school student, then you will be starting your studies in the Freshman Program, so the application form will just display "Freshman Program" for your major. At the end of your freshman year you will officially declare your specific major.
      • If you are a CEGEP student, you will be given a list of majors to choose from. If you chose "B Sc Physical, Earth, Math & Computer Sci", then you may select one of: Computer Science, Math and Computer Science, Stats and Computer Science, Physics and Computer Science, or Software Engineering. If you chose "B Sc Biological, Biomedical & Life Sci", then you may select the major for Computer Science and Biology. Note that you don't have to specify whether you want the Liberal, Majors or Honours program, nor any Minor programs at this time (these program details are done at registration time). You may also change your mind and select a different major from within the same group at registration time.
  • If you have decided on a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree:
    • For the box labelled "Faculty/School/Centre", select "Faculty of Arts"
    • For the box labelled "Program", select "B Arts"
    • For the box labelled "Major or Subject"
      • If you are a high school student, then you will be starting your studies in the Freshman Program, so the application form will just display "Freshman Program" for your major. At the end of your freshman year you will officially declare your specific major.
      • If you are a CEGEP student, your Major will show as "Undeclared", which just means that you don't have to specify your major. In the Faculty of Arts, students select their major and minor concentrations at the time of registration.
  • If you have decided on a Bachelor of Arts and Science (B.A.&Sc.) degree:
    • For the box labelled "Faculty/School/Centre", select the entry that says "Interfaculty, BA&Sc"
    • For the box labelled "Program", select "B Arts and Science"
    • For the box labelled "Major or Subject"
      • If you are a high school student, then you will be starting your studies in the Freshman Program, so the application form will just display "Freshman Program" for your major. At the end of your freshman year you will officially declare your specific major.
      • If you are a CEGEP student, your Major will show as "Undeclared", which just means that you don't have to specify your major. For the B.A.&Sc. degree, students select their major and minor concentrations at the time of registration.

Applying for an alternate program

Note that you may choose an alternate program as well. This is useful if you want to apply to two different programs. You will be considered for both programs and your application for each one will be decided independently.
