Tan Soamboonsrup is president and chief executive officer of Openface Internet. Based in Montreal and with a sales office in Toronto and with a web development and programming team in Bangkok, Openface is now Montreal’s largest ISP specializing in business Internet solutions. In addition to providing connectivity for business and operating its own network operations centre, Openface provides business VoIP services and has a full development and programming team that builds business websites and other web applications.
Tan was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and is a first generation Canadian whose parents emigrated from Thailand and who both work in the bio-medical sector. He came to Montreal in 1992 and started the first on-campus computer and accessories store, University Bytes, which he operated out of his dorm room and Solin Hall for three years before it moved to its current location in the Shatner Building.
Openface Internet was founded in 1994 while Tan was still attending McGill. The company’s first client was Alcan who approached him through the Computer Science Department to build an intranet.
Tan met his business partner Erik Rungi (B.Eng. 1997) at McGill. The company they created has been on the Deloitte and Touche Fast 50 for three years running and has a client list that includes McGill, ICAO, World Anti-Doping Agency, Cadillac-Fairview, ManuLife and many others.
