Affiliation: McGill University
Place: MC12
Start Time: 14:30
Title:
Abstract:

The first colloquium of the year will feature short presentations from a number of faculty members in the school of computer science. This is your opportunity to get a quick overview of the research that is happening in the department. Professors will talk about their research programs and recently published work, but more importantly they will also speak about current projects and future opportunities for new students. Come hear about new research problems, and then discuss with students and faculty over snacks and drinks at the reception that follows.

Title: Exploring Cyber-Physical Systems in Smart Emergency Response
Abstract:

As computation has been steadily proliferating over the past decades, most all technical systems have demonstrated improved functionality by embedding software in their physical realization. Moreover, advances in network technology has enabled connectivity between technical and enterprise systems at various levels of scale. The increasingly ubiquitous presence of embedded computation along with network connectivity has given rise to systems operating in a physical world that rely on closely integrated embedded computation tightly coupled with network connectivity. Systems that combine cyberspace and the physical world have come to be known as cyber-physical systems and are at the foundation of a new paradigm of collaborating embedded software systems. This presentation explores the cyber-physical systems paradigm in humanitarian missions, in particular in emergency response to natural disasters such as earthquakes. A smart emergency response system is presented to illustrate opportunities and challenges in cyber-physical system applications.
