Course Summary

Data Compression is the problem of how to encode (or re-code) data files so that they have fewer bits, and so they can be stored and transmitted efficiently. Data files can be text, images, or audio, or whatever you like. This course provides the basic theory and methods that underlie many of the popular data file standards such as PDF files, JPG images, MPEG videos, and MP3 audio. Students who enjoy probability, algorithms, and basic linear algebra usually find this course to be quite fun and interesting.
