McGill teams place 2nd and 3rd at ACM programming competition preliminaries

Students from SOCS are participating ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) 2006, sponsored by ACM and IBM. During the first round contest, two teams from McGill finished 2nd and 3rd among 17 teams from Northeast America, including strong teams from Brown University, UMass Amherst, etc. The top McGill team is now advancing to the second round contest, held at Rochester Institute of Technology next month. After the second round, the top 2 teams from the second round will be given the opportunity to compete at the World Final in Tokyo, Japan.
On a side note, on October 21, McGill also hosted a first round contest for teams from other universities, including MIT, Concordia, Clarkson, Middlebury, and ETS.
