Biography
Dr. Xue Liu is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science at McGill University. He is also an Associate Professor (by courtesy) of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, an associated member of the Center for Intelligent Machines (CIM), and an associated member of the Center for Advanced Systems and Technologies in Communications (SYTACom).  Dr. Liu is the founding director of the Cyber-Physical Systems Lab (CPSL) at McGill University since 2007. He worked as an Associate Professor and held the Samuel R. Thompson Chair in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2010. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. He obtained his B.S. degree in Mathematics and M.S. degree in Automatic Control both from Tsinghua University, China. He had also worked at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto, California and IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, New York. Dr. Liu received the Ray Ozzie Fellowship, the Saburo Muroga Fellowship, the Mavis Memorial Fund Award (for being the best graduate students in the College of Engineering who demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, and service) , and the C. W. Gear Outstanding Graduate Award  (for being the best graduate student in the Department of Computer Science) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been granted 2 US patents and filed 2 other US patents, and published more than 150 research papers in major International academic journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, including the Best Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics for year 2008, and the First Place Best Paper Award from the Fourth ACM Conference on Wireless Network Security (ACM WiSec'11) in 2011. His papers received over 3000 citations. Dr. Liu is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honorary Society, a lifetime member of the ACM,  a member of the IEEE, and USENIX. Dr. Liu's research has been supported by NSERC Discovery Grant Award, NSERC Strategic Grant, NSERC CRD Grant, Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), US National Science Foundation (NSF),  Quebec Fund for Research on Nature and Technology (FQRNT) New Researcher Award,  Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems(MITACS), CRIAQ, MDEIE, and several research labs and companies including Amazon, Bell Canada, General Motors, HP Labs, and Chatroulette. Dr. Liu's research has been reported by news media including the New York Times, Computer World, The Register, Huffington Post, CBC, NewScientist, MIT Technology Review's Blog, and McGill Daily etc. He served chair or technical program committee positions for 70+ academic conferences, is a reviewer for 30+ journals and 80+ conferences/workshops. Dr. Liu served as associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, and IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial. He also served on various national and international grant review panels. He currently serves as the chair of The Action Group on Hybrid Dynamic Systems of IEEE Technical Committee on Computational Aspects of Control Systems Design. Dr. Liu is a recipient of the Tomlinson Scientist Award (for recognition of excellence and scientific leadership).
