This Java applet allows you to enter two melodies and calculate several features of interest, including the Parsons Code, standard edit distance between the Parsons Code, and Hofmann-Engl's vector measure of melodic similarity.
A melody can be entered in either the upper or lower text field, either by using the on-screen piano keyboard or the your conventional computer keyboard. The pitches and durations of the melody are specified using GNU LilyPond syntax. The radio buttons select which text field is active - the active field receives entry from the piano keyboard and can be played back using the "Play" button. The "Clear" button clears both text fields. The "Calc" button updates the representations and similarity measurements.
