Eligibility

Lab consultant positions are primarily offered to qualified registered graduate students to work in the School's teaching labs.

Responsibilities

  • help computer science students (COMP-prefix courses exclusively)
  • check printers for paper and report hardware/software problems to the systems staff
  • supervise behavior of students using the SOCS labs
  • serve the full term of appropriate session (Fall, Winter, Summer)

Stipend

The current stipend for a lab consultant in the School is $11.50 per hour for a weekday shift and $12.00 per hour for a weekend shift. A 4% vacation entitlement is included in this rate. Lab hours vary based on lab needs and/or competence of the lab consultant.

Application Process

Students must complete an application form and submit it to the School's administrative office. They will then undergo an interview where their language and communication skills will be evaluated. Furthermore, they must sit an exam where technical skills and knowledge will be tested. Only successful applicants will be assigned.

Evaluation Process

In addition to the preliminary evaluations based on interviewing and testing, the School relies on the feedback from students using the lab and from the lab supervisor. This feedback remains in the consultant's employment record for future reference.

Any student who occupied the position of lab consultant in the School’s teaching labs and whose performance has been excellent will be given serious consideration to be named as the lab supervisor (when the previous lab supervisor leaves).
