Pamphlet
This introductory section contains account basics, how to connect to the SOCS machines, available internet services, and basic security issues. A printed version is widely available at Copie-EUS (underneath the McConnell cafeteria in the locker area), the help desk (209N), and at the SOCS Unix Seminars held at the beginning of each semester.

Getting More Help
As the title suggests, this section is dedicated to making sure you know what to do when you're lacking information. It is, quite possibly, the most important section in the Guide. The best help is self-help.

General Computing Tips
This section contains a Unix tutorial in the form of a local, customized version of UNIXhelp that will answer a great chunk of your Unix questions. It also contains an Internet and Communication section that will introduce you or better familiarize you with some basic Internet-based tools, a Connecting with Linux via PPP to DAS section that explains what its title implies, and an Oddities and Troubleshooting section which is designed to save you a lot of frustration by answering the question "Why?" when weird things happen, as well as providing tips and explanations for things that are specific to SOCS.

Editors, Debuggers, Compilers, and Other Tools
As a considerable chunk of your time at SOCS will be spent writing code, we've devoted an entire section to the tools that help you to achieve this task. Editors briefly describes what tools are available and how to use them, as well as going into more detail about some of the the more commonly-used editors; Compilers and Interpreters provides information ranging from the most basic options for compiling code, to compilation options that can actually make your coding efforts easier and better; the Debuggers section outlines the debugging tools available and how to use them in a useful way; the Other Tools section covers useful programming tools that don't fall into any of the above categories.

Currently, only the Editors section is available.

SOCS Culture
This section contains everything from really useful information to writing that's pure entertainment. In short, it's the stuff that couldn't fit anywhere else and much of it is highly subjective. You'll find everything from commentary on "flaming", to how to get Internships.

This is a good section to read when you need a break from the heavy-duty computer stuff in the other sections.

Useful Links (not yet complete)
A few useful links to other related sites can be found here. Some are McGill and/or SOCS-specific, other are useful just for general help.
Contributors and History of Changes
If you're interested in finding out more about the people who volunteered their considerable efforts and made this project possible, you'll want to peruse this section. Additionally, you'll find the History of Changes here, which is useful to keep an eye on for corrections or new additions.

Feedback
If you'd like to give us some feedback on the site, anything from a detailed critique to a dislike of our colour scheme, the Feedback page is the place to do it.

In addition, you can be added to our mailing list and kept informed of changes to the site.
